Title: Beyond Good & Evil similarities with other games

hotspot - October 16, 2008 05:49 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure if there's one of these laying around anywhere but anyway...

so we probabally all know of atleast one game that shares a smilarity with BG&E.

you all probabally already know of Kya dark lineage on account of me talking about it all the time.

i'll just put them up here.

both kya and jade are girls.

They both have a throwing weapon and a melee weapon ( kya has her boomy and jade has a magic glove that shoots discs, kya uses her fists and jade uses her pole)

Both throwing weapons can kill small enemies and hit switches and buttons.

They both wear tanktops ( jade has a pink tanktop under her jacket but is not shown in the picture provided becuase she is turning around.)

They both get something in the game that allows them to see far away (kya a telescope and jade a camera with a zoom in lens)

They can both capture animals to get money (kya captures them with a trap bomb and brings them to the zoo, jade takes pictures of animals to send the pictures to a sciece center to get money)

They both have breakable boxes that usually contain money but sometimes something else.

They both have a family member in the game ( kya has frank and jade has her uncle, although not blood related)

They both can scrunch down to avoid or ambush enemies

They also can roll to move faster while in the scrunch position

They both can grab on ledges

they both only have one glove and not another for the other hand

==This ones a spoiler for both games you shouldn't see this one unless you have beaten both or just want to spoil yourself==

They are both aliens, kya's father is not from earth and jade is a domz.

==========

Now here is my original reason for posting this topic. I've recently been playing the game "La pucelle Tactics"
and this time i've noticed that it has something very similar to BG&E.

In la pucelle you take the role of Prier a 16 year old girl that works at a church called "Church of the holy maiden" , she is a Demon hunter and hunts demons along with her younger brother Culotte and a woman named alouette who can't remember anything that happend two years ago and beyond.
now at first they do some typical demon hunting, but then they find out that a rival church called the "Church of the Divine mother" are up to no good and are trying to make the world a place for demons to live.

Now what i find similar to BG&E is that...

for one the protaganists are both girls ( but that's something that's really obvious and not that much worth mentioning, but i digress.)

Both protaganists have a family member in the game and the member also helps them out in battle.

Both Jade and Prier work for a charity organization, Jade taking care of children who's parent's were captured by the domz and Prier working for the church which has many different charity functions.

Both heroine's don't have parent's anymore.(prier's died in a carriage accident)

Alouette can probabally be seen as double h, the only difference is that alouette is always in the group. and othere characters join prier later.

The iris network and the church of the holy maiden are the good groups while the alpha sections and the church of the divine mother are the bad groups.
also be noted that mostly everyone in prier's hometown go to the church of the divine mother and don't care about the church of the holy maiden, this can be seen as to how the alpha sections tricked everyone into them being the good guys and the iris network the bad guys.

another thing is that in a way both jade and prier capture monsters.
jade takes pictures while prier use an ability called "Purify" to turn monsters into good guys. although all the human characters know purify, and monsters can learn it too.

they both have a stick like weapon, jade's being the dai jo and Prier's being a baton.

Capt'n Obvious? :P

There a new game coming around at some point or another that looks a bit similar. It's called Mirror's Edge. Both games feature young women who are attempting to fight against a corrupt government, and both do so in more "mundane" ways than the norm--Jade and photojournalism, and Faith (the heroine of the other game) by being a messenger-runner. There's rooftop chases and hopping, though they make up a lot more of the game in Mirror's Edge. And they both wear a cut-off glove on their right hands. :P

Cut-off gloves are becoming the new fashion! :D

The legen od Zelda wind waker is similer.

tjoeltje - October 26, 2008 02:33 PM (GMT)
I'd really like to buy Mirror's Edge... Never heard of it before, but if it's like Denouement says, I think I'm in love :D

BG&E Voyager - October 26, 2008 06:39 PM (GMT)
Yeah it does look pretty awesome! Love the art style.

The_Evil_Reaper - October 26, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
Sounds pretty cool indeed.

@Hotspot: Yeah... well some of the things you mentioned are kinda similar in every game. Like the melee and throw weapon? I mean, come on, is there a game that doesn't have melee and throw weapons?
Seriously, in every FPS you can knock someone out with fist or guns and throw grenades. Yet, that doesn't make them similar to BGE.

Same goes for:
- grabbing ledges (seriously)
- Crouching/rolling (again, seriously <_< )
- Breakable boxes(yeah, that's really something special)
- Something that zooms in(Sniper rifles, anyone?)

Now as far as I understood it, the games(Kya en BGE) do have similarities, but you have to put it differently.
- In both games a female character plays the lead(not entirely uncommon, but still out of the ordinary)
- Both games have a stealth elements
- Both games have platform elements(that'd be the throwing gyro discs at switches part)
- Both games have a bigger role for animals
- In both games family members of the main character play a big(?) role

See? That's less stating the obvious and more actually showing some of the more special features of the games.

About similarities with others games, dunno if it was said but maybe that will remind you something ^^ : http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=ARmpbhAKPw8

Guys, so I checked the Tomb Raider Underworld demo on my Xbox 360 the other day. I noticed that the menu is pretty damn similar to BGE's. Here's a crappy picture I found on the internet.

I always thought it was a cool and handy system.

Black Isle rip-off :P

You know, BG&E is an enormous tribute to the Zelda series, even the name of the main cities in both series are quite similar (and people from those cities are called Hillians in BG&E and Hylians in Zelda. You can't say that's a coincidence). And Jade wears green, as Link does xD
Combat mechanics and dungeons are definetely inspired on nintendo's franchise, as well as the plot have a connection (link and jade being connected to the evil power -in one case by the Triforce and in the other by being part of it-, someone important to you being kidnapped (zelda/Pej'd) and having to rescuing him, then going to the evil fortress to fight the evil.

As I've always said, BG&E is a Zelda game set in the future, with a black haired-female link, a hugely improved emotional conecctions between characters, and some new mechanics mainly from Metal gear (infiltration parts) and starfox. And photography xD.

And... hi!! It has been a really long time since my last post! xD

(it's weird I finished this post with a sentence commonly wrote at the beginning O.o)

Duke: that is a really convenient menu system, guess Ubi wants to start some trends! ^_^

Inscticide shares a couple of similarities with BG&E

the heroine detective Chrys List and jade both have a similar appearance and wear green.

chrys often makes jokes and can be sarcastic like jade.

this may be irrelavant but while playing the game, it often reminded me of BG&E

Wy do people copy BG&E. It mush be a better game then I thougth. About Mirror's Edge is that out yet. If so if anything is close to BG&E I went it.

jade123 - January 19, 2009 03:11 PM (GMT)
Mirror's Edge is that on PS2 or X-Box I hope so.

...PS2 and Xbox(1)? Are you kidding and simultaneously talking off-topic? :D

About the topic: Before playing Beyond Good & Evil again, I played and completed Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It was weird somehow, without first person-perspective, no helmet... but you know what I thankfully used? The information the camera provides as some replacement for the Scan Visor in Metroid.

It's on the PS3 and XBox 360, and the only similarity I can think it shares with BG&E is a bad-ass female character. Maybe there's a level where you have to run from a laser-shooting general on roof-tops

I think BG&E looks quite like half life 2. Alyx and Jade are both girls and their looks and clothes are quite a like. The combine look a little bit like the Alpha sections, they deny the truth and spread their own propaganda and they really want to have their civil protection/police state. Just a quick though about it though, it just really jumped out

Starrting from @Hootspot's original post:
  • both kya and jade are girls.
There a 50% chance of that in real life, about a 10% chance in video games.

  • They both have a throwing weapon and a melee weapon ( kya has her boomy and jade has a magic glove that shoots discs, kya uses her fists and jade uses her pole)
This is pretty common in any fantasy-oriented game, having ranged/sniping ability and up-close-and-personal @ss-kickery. Even if, as with games like Parasite Eve, the melee is downplayed or only used as a last resort.

  • Both throwing weapons can kill small enemies and hit switches and buttons.
This I'll grant. Lara Croft has to pull switches with her own hands (usually), unless it's something that she can (in the Crystal Dynamics games) pull with her magnetic grapple -- and that can only be done from very short range. Other games do have the "finishing-blow" kick, however.

  • They both wear tanktops ( jade has a pink tanktop under her jacket but is not shown in the picture provided becuase she is turning around.)
Well, the game designer has to highlight their femininity somehow, and this is the least blatant, most kid-apporopruate way of doing so.

  • They both get something in the game that allows them to see far away (kya a telescope and jade a camera with a zoom in lens)
Just about any game with ranged weaponry -- and the zoom doubles for disk targeting as well as photo-taking -- is going to have this.

  • They can both capture animals to get money (kya captures them with a trap bomb and brings them to the zoo, jade takes pictures of animals to send the pictures to a sciece center to get money)
It's a less-then-lethal kid-friendly way to acquire cash. And with (in Jade's case) a finite number of pics to be snapped, it makes for less ability, and therefore less incentive, to grind for cash.

  • They both have breakable boxes that usually contain money but sometimes something else.
This is a pretty standard platforming/adventure game trope.

  • They both have a family member in the game ( kya has frank and jade has her uncle, although not blood related)
This happens in other games without female leads. The only one coming immediately to my mind is Jack Russel's sister, Adele, in Radiata Stories. One of the supporting characters, Ganz, alsol encounters his father, Gawain -- although whether as friend or foe depends on which storyline you select...

  • They both can scrunch down to avoid or ambush enemies
    Standard for any stealth-oriented game.

  • They also can roll to move faster while in the scrunch position
Almost any game that features a "scrunch" movement mode has this, like the lattermost Tomb Raider games, or Tenchu: Stealth Assassins.

  • They both can grab on ledges
As above, but for ledge-grabbing. Tenchu is most remarkable, because these ninjas need not sheathe their weapons to grip a ledge...

  • they both only have one glove and not another for the other hand
Okay, I can't argue with this one either, other than to note what a major stretch it is...

==This ones a spoiler for both games you shouldn't see this one unless you have beaten both or just want to spoil yourself==
  • They are both aliens, kya's father is not from earth and jade is a domz.
Is Jade's DomZ-ness a matter of parentage or experimentation? Or just wishful fan-think?
