Title: Any one carry a knife?
G.A.Pster - October 15, 2009 04:22 AM (GMT)
I’ve been carrying one around constantly clipped to my pocket for the last two years,
This one as a matter of fact, a very nice assisted opening Kershaw.

And it’s an invaluable tool for my daily activities there’s always something that needs to be cut either troublesome packaging, binding twine, sharpening a dull pencil or whatever.
Plus it gives me a basic degree of self-defense.
Do any of you carry knives? If so, show it off.
(Surly there must be some European countries that trust their citizens enough to let them carry a knife)

Does butter knife also count ...?
I have to think about the simpsons episode with Bart and the knife now, lol :D
Well I have a Swiss army knife ^^

In Britain it is illegal to carry a knife around. There are actually really strict rules about them. They have even suggested that if you carry a knife in public you have to be lisenced to do so. You know you would have to be a contractor or a chef, someone who's career requires a knife.

I think that same rule goes for here. There are some schools where little riots got out a control with knifes, so they started checking.

That's a statement I don't understand, I'm sure they trust us with it, it's just not necessary. If you carry around a knife which no ever need to use, why the hell carry it with you?
I do know people who carry around pocket knifes though, with the bottle & can opener features. That I see the use of. I hardly ever need one though, so is dead weight to me. I believe pocketknives are legal, just at certain knives they probably draw the line.
As for your activities, sure a knife is handy for that, but scissors do the trick too. Or just plain strength.
Except for sharpening pencils, but I personally hate butchering the poor creatures with knives. I already feel bad if I let them fall.

I agree with Reaper, I don't really think it's necessary. For you Gap it seems to make more sense since you live in a more wilderness kind of area right? Sharpening pencils with a knife...isn't that kind of incovenient, and really strange to do in front of other people?

Irt Ralexand the victorinox Swiss army knives are nice, but I won’t use a knife without a locking blade, it’s just a recipe for disaster when the blade goes back onto your fingers! :'(
If you’re ever actually going to use it get one of these new ones with a locking blade.
linky.

I don’t live in the country, more like a neighborhood; you can go for about 35 miles in any directing before it gets rural. ^_^
If there weren’t any trees in the way I could see Portland’s sky scrapers (population 575,930) from where I’m sitting now, it about 8 miles away.
Sharpening a pencil actually works better than you’d think, I just timed myself and it took 10 seconds for me to sharpen a pencil and it wasn’t just dull, the lead was broken off.
I’ve never had any trouble with people weirding out about me using my knife, mind you I wouldn’t do if in a courthouse or if there was a police officer across from me (don’t want to get shot, lol).

Aw come on, everyone sharpens stuff with a huge knife in front of other people!
Oh and because of the swiss army knife, if you are not totally clumsy then it shouldn't be a problem.

Talking about sharpening things with a knife reminds me of an old Rikki Fulton sketch. He played a traffic warden called supercop and one time he comes across Taggart parked in a car. (Taggart is a TV detective, the show is set in Glasgow). I'll have to post a link, stick with this clip to the end it is really funny. It will be first clip after the opening credits starting at about 50 seconds.

I had a most tiny pocket knife, but sharp as hell :P
But the authorities in the Netherlands don't even allow you to carry a rubber knife,
so I won't begin with it at all. Not even for self defence

But come on, I you have to take something sharp with you, at least take a katana:P

Yeah maybe in Japan a few centuries ago! :P

Would you believe me if I told you I DO have a knife in my backpack? It's not too sharp, though, and it's used for something other than cutting or sharpening anything.

I've got an older Spyderco Endura. I don't have a picture of mine, but it looks like
this with a lot more wear. Nothing for scale, but it's about 9" long when opened. I used it when I worked at an outdoor gear and boat store. A regular utility knife just doesn't stand up to cutting through the 3" corrugated cardboard that some sailboats are shipped in, or prying out 1.5" staples when unpacking a cargo box.

I am suprised that someone could carry a knife and not be caught by the authoroties. I wouldn't mind having a knife around, after all i know knife fu! But i prefer throwing them instead of hand to hand.
you know who else carries a knife? this onion creature
