Title: PROJECT - Fan Mosaic
Description: To launch with the website

Pey'j - November 18, 2009 12:51 AM (GMT)
This is a project idea I've mulled over in my head for a long time now. Get as many fans as possible to take pictures of themselves, and arrange those pictures into a mosaic (Jade's face perhaps). Print it out as a poster with some kind of caption like "We <3 BGE" and send it off to Ubisoft Montpelier, as a sort of fan appreciation gift. What do you think?

Before you start protesting that this project is way too huge, don't worry, I've thought through some of the details already:

We'll make the photo submission process as painless as possible. Might even make a Flash program where the person can take a picture straight from their web cam. Give them a basic color to try and wear/surround themselves with (depending on where they'll be in the mosaic), but if they can't even be bothered to do that then oh well. We'll have to do a fair amount of cheating to get this to work (ghost the real image behind it, color the pictures, etc.), but the important thing is not that we do it "right" but that the fine folks at Ubisoft get the point: we love BG&E. It's all the fans working together to create something special.

My target? A 30x30 image, so...about 900 people. Okay sorry I should have told you to sit down before I said that. Once you've picked yourself up off the floor I'll explain: as I said, I want this to be a super simple process, so that it doesn't take much more effort than signing a petition (which at last count had about 4500 signatures). We'll publicize the heck out of this thing, try and get it on gaming blogs, whatever we can do. Once we've done all that, if we still haven't reached 900 pictures we'll drop our goal down to whatever makes sense. But might as well shoot for the moon right? No harm in that.

Any questions, thoughts? I plan to head up this project myself, although it might not get started for real for a little while. Still, I want it to launch with the website. That's my grand ambition anyway.

I came up with a similar idea years ago, to use all the screenshots of BG&E and make a photo mosaic.
It’s just not possible with my 56k though. :arr:

You don’t have to worry about colors actually manually assembling a mosaic there’s an excellent freeware program called Andrea Mosaic it can tweak colors if necessary.

Sounds awesome - I'll do it.

Denouement - November 18, 2009 06:25 PM (GMT)
Count me in as a face, too! Wooo!

I forgot to say in my last post, I’m in.

You can have a decent mosaic with as few as 50 pictures, of course the more photos you have the more detailed the mosaic you can make.

Well I'd rather avoid repeating pictures if at all possible. I just like the idea that each individual cell is a different fan. That's why we'd need to do some cheating, like ghosting the real image behind it all. The important thing I want to get across is not "Look at this awesome mosaic!", but "Look what all of us fans put together for you!"

I got the idea from when I was living away from home for a year, and my friends back home all made a birthday card for me - each person held up a sign with a letter on it, so all put together it spelled "Happy Birthday!" It was pretty much the best present ever. :D

Ah, I once did a mosaic of Marilyn Monroe with faces of (bio)medicine students. Well, technically I didn't do it, but I was in a commission that did. It looks rather awesome.

So count me in! I'll make sure that I collect what I can from friends :)

If I EVER start making BG&E videos again, i'll make sure to publicize this project. I'm willing to bet that a lot of BG&E fans on YouTube will do this; I think it's a wonderful idea.

Thanks! I'm pretty proud of it myself.

I'll be mostly working on this myself for a while (and I might not even get started for another month or two), but I thought I'd bring it up and see what you guys thought. The reason I want to launch it with the website is so that we can have something tangible for people to check out as soon as the website is up, and then of course they can go on and see the rest of it. Hopefully we can expand our community a bit as well as make something really cool!

That program can be set to not repeat images.

Ooooo I'm definitly in. This is a good idea G.A.P you seem to have put in a great deal of thought into it which is a good thing as this is going to be a huge project to pull off. However I don't have a webcam but I'll see what I can do anyway.

For that one I used my oddworld folder for the library, which has at least 1200+ files.
That's why it looks so good. :quack:

Wow thats really good especially the second one, although I need to ask what images have you considered? I mean if we asume we will be doing Jade which image of her shall be used?

Blink - November 22, 2009 10:14 PM (GMT)
Great project :) I'll talk about it on BGE Myth when you'll need the pictures. Count french fans in this project ;)

 Uh wow. I mean the second one obviously looks better, but I'm still impressed at how good that first image looks with so few images. I'm still of the opinion, however, that we should not duplicate images in the mosaic. That will obviously restrict how good this mosaic will end up looking, but will make it so that each individual cell is a different fan. That, I think, makes it a bit more special.

I would see the final product being a mix of using Andrea and adjusting things manually. We'll see how it goes.

Oh, as for what picture we should use, I vote for something that's a good close up of Jade's face, otherwise the details will get lost.

G.A.Pster - November 24, 2009 11:54 PM (GMT)
Me too having duplicate fan pictures would be lame.

I think as far as the picture we end up using we’ll have to evaluate it once we’ve got the fan photos.

Teaser92 - December 5, 2009 09:13 AM (GMT)
So what... should we start sending the photos in to you or what.

Pey'j - December 5, 2009 06:02 PM (GMT)
Oh no, not yet. What I'm gonna do is create a Flash program for submitting photos, which we'll launch with the website. So this project isn't gonna happen for a while yet, I just wanted to put it out there and see what you guys thought.

Verde_Creed - December 7, 2009 10:56 PM (GMT)
This is a very cool idea. Plus it wouldn't be that difficult to pull off really. Makes me want to have the website up, JUST so we can start this!

Teaser92 - December 14, 2009 07:30 PM (GMT)
Well now we have another reason to get the website up and running
