Title: BG&E makes gameinformer's top 200 games!
Description: A HUGE mention from game informer!
Verde_Creed - November 29, 2009 02:39 AM (GMT)
I don't subscribe to gameinformer, but the most recent issue was their 200th and so they listed off their top 200 games of all time. I picked up the latest copy and had a pleasant surprise when I got to the tale end of the list:

I thought you might enjoy it! (And I apologize if I'm not the first!)

I just read that list over on another forum. A lot of my favourite games weren't in there, and BGE should have been higher, but what do I know, eh?
I haven't even played like 175 of those games. Not even the 'classics'. Guess that's what I get for not being alive in the NES/SNES days - I miss out on all the nostalgia games that top these lists.
Still, at least BGE was on there.

Yeah, it's hard for me to complain that BG&E was at the end of the list when it's getting some attention at all. Still, ONLY 200!?

Yeah, there are more then a dozen of sports games above it. Those games might be good in their way, but still, no sports game has ever been better than a game with a story to me.

QFT. Every game with a storyline is far better than any sports/racing game to me. Though I'm rather biased, since I don't even like watching sports on TV.

Here's the TLDR version of what I thought of the List:
- The Legend of Zelda (NES) is number one!?!? WTF?
- That's right! Tetris (#3) is WAY better than Final Fantasy VII (#15) </sarcasm>
- I do agree though FFIII(#8) >>>> FFVII(#15)!
- More love for SNES: LoZ:ALttP(#12) > LoZ:OoT (#20)
- Starcraft only at 35? W/e
- Earthbound @ 113? This is obviosly a joke list...
- Metroid Fusion(#128) > Starfox (136), Civ IV (141), Maniac Mansion (142), Super Mario RPG (148)... OVER-RATED!
Top Ten:
10. Ms. Pacman (Arcade - 1981)
9. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES - 1990)
8. Final fantasy III (SNES - 1994)
7. Metroid (NES - 1986)
6. Doom (PC - 1993)
5. Half-Life 2 (PC - 2004)
4. Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - 2001)
3. Tetris (PC - 1984)
2. Super Mario Bros. (NES - 1985)
1. Legend of Zelda (NEWS - 1987)

Yeah I subscribe to it, sorry I didn’t inform you guys.
I sent them an email to tell them that BG&E uses cut scenes and it’s Sir Michel Ancel.
Denouement - November 30, 2009 03:03 AM (GMT)
Technically, it's Sir Shigeru Miyamoto, too, but you never see anyone doing that. French knighthood just doesn't seem to count for as much.

I hate those top 100 or w/e lists, their very inconsistent. I just can't see how you can have Tetris, GTA III, and Pacman all in a top 10

Speaking as someone with background in literary criticism, the "greatness" of a work isn't always measured by standalone quality, but the work's influence on later works. Tetris, in addition to being a million-seller many times over, more or less founded a genre. BG&E, sadly, just hasn't spawned many imitators. :P
So while, say, I don't enjoy Romeo and Juliet as a play, I recognize that it's had a LOT of influence on future tragic romance... and on sappy teenagers calling each other "Romeo" and "Juliet" whilst missing the implication that both of them did stupid things out of lust and then died. Ahhh, it's fun being an English major. :sinister:

Wow, brilliant point Denouement!
As I went back and read about why Legend of Zelda was number one I saw their logic. They gave it the credit because modern game designers cited the original Legend of Zelda as one of the first games that really got a hold of them and got them into the industry. without it, we might not have some of the up and coming greats that we see now. It's influence helped define the ones who are now in the industry, and that's why it ranked in their minds as number one.

Ahh, the good old Nostalgia Filter effect. But, then again, Nostalgia Filter isn't always a bad thing.

Great point Denouement :) I guess I just have some extreme biases :P

I figured that too and I’m not majoring in anything (since I’m not in college yet) :P

Denouement does make a good point, however I still don't know that I'd put Zelda quite that high. I mean it seems like an obvious choice but really, Super Mario Bros. should be number one. Because it not only was a huge influence, it still holds up quite well by today's standards, which is saying something. Metroid definitely doesn't (IMO) and Zelda only kinda does.
And I would most absolutely definitely put BG&E higher. Of course. I mean it's still in my personal top 10 but for an overall list...I think it should have made top 50 or top 100 at the VERY least.
