I think it'd probably be a good idea to set down a few guidelines so that we're all on the same page with this.
First up is the formatting of the posts. All posts in this forum (except character bios and OOC discussion) are expected to be in character. The exception is in-game OOC comments. This is the formatting I'd like to use in posts:
- Plain text is an action your character is taking. They attempt to do the action, and if nothing stops them from doing so, will do just what you said. If something prevents it, I'll point it out and ignore anything after whatever stopped the action. If you don't state or give any indication that your character is doing something, they didn't do it.
- Text in "quotation marks" is something your character says. If you don't put it in quotation marks, your character never said it out loud.
- Text in (parentheses) is conversation between characters and the GM.
- Text in [square brackets] is OOC conversation between us, the people sitting at the computers.
It might seem a bit picky, but I think it'd help ensure there's no "you never said that" "yes I did!" "wait, so did I get in the car or not?" issues. As an example, here's a series of posts that could go on:
And so on.
Every once in a while I (or whoever's GMing) will ask you to roll dice. If you don't have a set of RPG dice, there's a roller
here that lets you specify how many sides you want, and such, and it's not hard to find others online. I'll generally only make you roll if your character is taking an action that they'd have trouble with, but still might succeed. If I ever want you to roll more than one die, I want the results of each roll separately, not the sum total. You could of course re-roll until you got rolls you like, but I'll trust you not to do that if you trust me not to ruin the game for you based on a bad roll. A botched roll might put you in a sticky situation, but it'll never be one that you can't get out of with some quick thinking. It might even make for more fun if your character doesn't succeed on the roll!
Don't control other characters or the environment. If something happens or you take an action, it's up to each player how his or her own character deals with it. NPCs and the environment are GM territory. I'll take your character's strengths and weaknesses into account when deciding what happens, so don't worry about that.
When there's action sequence or some other sort of time-critical situation, I'll ask everyone for actions before proceeding. I want to know the next thing your character is going to try to do, so I can coordinate what happens when everyone does their thing at the same time. You can talk to other characters and not waste your action, but remember that the actions I'm asking for will all happen pretty much at the same time, so you might want to have your character wait for an opening instead of shooting at the enemy that your teammate is fist-fighting with. Once everyone's posted an action (or after enough time has gone by, if someone's taking a long time) then I'll tell the outcome, and if the situation isn't over, I'll ask for actions again.
As always, feel free to post any questions and comments in OOC discussion, or PM me if you've got something you want cleared up but kept out of sight for now.
Have fun!
